Natural environmentNatural environment

As we all know that world environment Day is celebrated on 5 June every year. And the theme of 2020 environment day is celebrate biodiversity. So we will tell you about our natural environment.

The term 'environment' is derived from the French word 'Environia' which means 'to surround'. Hence, the surrounding in which the living organisms live constitute their environment. The Environment influences the organisms and the organisms also influence their Environment. Hence, the protection of the Environment depends on how responsibly the humans behave towards it.

The increase in human pollution has placed an increasing demand on the Environment in terms of resources and their utilisation. Wastes are generated due to the utilisation of resources which have to be disposed into environment. The waste produced are of two types - biodegradable and non bio-degradable.

We find that while certain materials in the soil degraded completely, some materials degraded only partially and some did not degrade at all at all. the materials which can be easily degraded by biological process like the action of microbes like bacteria and fungi are called biodegradable. For example: leaves, pieces of wood, peels of fruits and vegetables, cotton cloth, jute, hay,a bones, etc. the materials that are not easily broken down into simpler substances by biological forces over a period are called non-biodegradable substances. Such substances stay  for a long period of time in this soil and adversely affect the environment. For example: aluminium, plastic, glass, pesticides, nails etc.

There are two components of our environment:-
1. Biotic components- living organisms
2. Abiotic components- non living

How does non biodegradable waste affect the Environment?

It is quite common to see cows and buffaloes eating plastic along with garbage these days. Plastic bags clock the animals stomach, gradually leading to a painful death. Plastic bags clog the drains and form in impermeable layers in the soil affecting its porosity and percolation; thereby, affecting soil fertility.
Time taken by biodegradable waste to decompose:-

  • Plastic bottles: 70-450 years
  • Plastic bag: 500-1000 years
  • Tin can: around 50 years
  • Leather shoes: 25-40 years
  • Thread: 3-4 months
  • Cotton: 1-5 months
  • Rope: 3-14 months
  • Milk packet: 5 years
  • Cigarette: 1-12 years
  • Nylon clothes: 30-40 years
  • Sanitary napkins and children diapers: 500-800 years
  • Glass bottles: 10,00,000 years
  • Hair spray bottle: 200-500 years
  • Fishing line: 600 years
  • Aluminium can: 200 years

So this was the full details about our natural environment on this world environment Day.
So be safe and follow us.
